10 Quick Tips to Save More Electricity
Being energy-efficient and lowering your electric bill can save a few dollars each month, which adds up to extra money in your pocket. But how can we cut our electric bill without making major sacrifices or investing extra money to see some savings? Check out these 10 simple tips on how to lower your electric bills and save more money each month.
- During warmer months, use appliances like the clothes dryer, dishwasher and oven in the morning or evening when it is cooler outside. Your AC will not have to work as hard to keep your home cooler than if you used them when outside temperatures are at their highest.
- Purchase black out curtains to hang in windows that the sun comes in.
- Use night lights in kids bedrooms/bathrooms rather than leaving the lights on for them. This will ease their fear of the dark and light their way in the night if they need to get out of bed.
- Be sure to always turn off the lights in the room you’re leaving. Even if you think you’re coming right back, it’s best to conserve electricity while you’re not in the room!
- Invest in a toaster oven to cook small dinners or sides. It’s easy to pop a casserole/dish in the toaster oven to cook instead of using the big oven. There's no need to warm up the whole oven when you only need to cook one thing.
- Close the vents in rooms you rarely go in! Instantly you can reduce the square feet you have to cool or heat.
- Cook meals in bulk. It’s very easy to double a recipe to create twice as much food and left overs for the next day. It will prevent you from having to heat up the oven all over again.
- Baths use a lot more water than showers, which means a lot more electricity to heat the water. Take a shower instead and purchase a low-flow shower head to reduce water/electricity consumption even more.
- Insulate your pipes. If your pipes are in an unheated garage or exposed beneath your house, insulate them with pipe-insulating foam. By adding insulation to pipes you will prevent them from freezing and the hot water pipes will stay warm.
- Use the low-wattage bulbs when you can. There’s no need to “over light” a room—Bright lights are handy for hallways and closets but the lamps in your family room can be a bit dimmer.
